The Importance of Poultry ShowingÂ
Across Connecticut, poultry showing was once a popular passion shared amongst many breeders. A way to show off their best prized birds. Barns used to be full from floor to ceiling with hundreds of birds. Now that generation of showers has passed on and retired. Fairs are struggling to find enough birds to meet the Connecticut Fair Association 100 small animal minimum (poultry & rabbits) to keep their major fair status and offer a good show for the public.Â

Over the years, I was asked by more & more fairs to bring 40, 50, 60+ birds i to help fill their barn. To me, it has never been about collecting the premiums, it has been the importance of educating the public about chickens. Displaying the variety of heritage breeds I take pride in raising in & giving them the opportunity to see something completely new in person makes the experience.
Â
I was also fortunate enough to take over at Poultry Superintendent of the Chester & Portland Fair in 2020, the Haddam Neck Poultry Barn in 2025 and the Lebanon Small Animal Barn this past July (2026)Â
